Record Equipment Measurements
Learn to record a measured value for an existing equipment reading point in ManWinWin Desktop, identifying the employee and the reading date and time. Check the saved reading alongside previous records for that point.
Accurately recording equipment measurements is fundamental for effective asset management and proactive maintenance. This process allows organizations to monitor asset health, identify trends, and anticipate potential failures before they escalate into costly breakdowns.
Where it's available and step by step
Step by step in ManWinWin Desktop
- 1
In ManWinWin Desktop, select the Plant module and select the equipment concerned.
- 2
Right-click the equipment and choose Reading Points.
- 3
Select the Parameter row corresponding to the point where the measurement was taken.
- 4
Right-click in the records area and choose New to open the New Reading window.
- 5
Select or confirm the Employee associated with the reading.
- 6
Enter the Date and Time of the observation, then enter the measured value in Record using the parameter's unit.
- 7
Check the employee, date, time and value, then click OK to save.
- 8
Review the records for the selected reading point and confirm that the new value appears with the correct date and time alongside any previous readings.
Theory and technical background
Importance of Accurate Measurement Recording
Recording accurate and timely equipment measurements is critical for condition-based maintenance (CBM) strategies. These measurements provide objective data points reflecting the operating state of an asset, enabling trend analysis and the detection of deviations from normal operating parameters. Without precise data, it's challenging to make informed maintenance decisions, leading to either unnecessary interventions or, worse, unexpected failures. This practice underpins the effectiveness of predictive maintenance programs and supports compliance with standards like ISO 55000 by providing verifiable asset performance data.
Benefits for Predictive and Preventive Maintenance
Integrating recorded measurements into a CMMS significantly enhances predictive and preventive maintenance efforts. For predictive maintenance, trend analysis of measurements (e.g., vibration, temperature, pressure) can forecast potential equipment degradation, allowing for proactive scheduling of interventions. For preventive maintenance, recorded data can validate the effectiveness of scheduled tasks or signal the need for adjustments to maintenance intervals. This data-driven approach minimizes unexpected downtime, optimizes resource allocation, and extends asset lifespan, contributing directly to improved KPIs such as MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) and asset availability.
Data Integrity and Auditability
Ensuring data integrity for equipment measurements is paramount. Each reading should be clearly associated with the specific equipment, measurement parameter, employee, and precise date/time of observation. This level of detail provides a robust audit trail, essential for regulatory compliance, root cause analysis, and performance validation. A well-maintained historical record of measurements within a CMMS, as guided by principles in standards like EN 13306, allows for comprehensive analysis, trend identification, and the continuous improvement of maintenance strategies, turning raw data into actionable insights.
Best practices
- Always verify the unit of measure before entering values to avoid data entry errors.
- Ensure the recorded date and time accurately reflect when the measurement was taken.
- Regularly review measurement trends to identify deviations or potential issues early.
- Train personnel on correct measurement techniques and CMMS data entry procedures.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it important to associate an employee with each reading?
Attributing readings to an employee ensures accountability and traceability. It helps in auditing, identifying training needs, and consulting the person who performed the observation for clarification, improving overall data reliability and process adherence.
How does recording measurements improve equipment reliability?
By continuously monitoring equipment parameters, deviations from normal operating conditions can be detected early. This allows for proactive interventions, preventing minor issues from escalating into major failures, thereby enhancing overall reliability and uptime.
Can I record multiple measurements for the same point at different times?
Yes, a CMMS like ManWinWin is designed to store a historical log of all measurements for each reading point. This enables trend analysis and provides a comprehensive overview of the asset's performance over its operational life.
